After having two years+ of no rain outs, Tuesday’s downpour was too much for the course to handle. On the flip side the course did show flashes of green which we haven’t seen in years. Even if the rain did stop it would have been quazi-playable and would have been cart path only. I didn’t hear any complaints when it was cancelled.
The timing on the rainout was particularly bad for the four teams battling for the flight championship shirts. If this had happened any other week, we could have extended the season, but since we already had our banquet scheduled we were kind of boxed-in.
Fear not, we’ve got a solution for determining the champions for each flight.
So, here is how we are going to finish out the season:
- Next week (Sept 6th) will be our season ending tournament and banquet. It’s also Bob Birecree’s birthday, so there’s that.
- The golf format will be an 18 hole Ryder-Cup variant and everyone will participate. 6 holes each of Scramble, Best Ball and Greensome. Yep, that’s a game, look it up.
- The tournament will start promptly at noon on the front 9. As always, scorecards will be provided.
- All play will be from the white tees.
- Upon completion of hole 9 proceed to 10-18 before looping back and finishing up your remaining holes on the front.
- The driving range will have practice balls out by 10:30.
- Assemble at the clubhouse at 11:50 for a quick review of the game before heading out on the front 9. The back of the scorecard will have detailed instructions on the game so read it!
- There will be prizes for the best scores as well as long-drive and closest-to-the-pin.
Upon completion of the tournament next Tuesday, drop your scorecards with the pro who will be posting the scores on a board. Do this before you unload your clubs at your car so the scores can be tabulated prior to the banquet. Remember, you are not playing against the other twosome in your group, you are competing against all teams in the league. If for some crazy reason you are unable to make it next week, please let me know ASAP so we can create legit scorecards.
After dinner we will award the prizes for the tournament, have a few words from your secretary and entertain any changes people would like to bring forth for next season. We will take nominations and vote for the NEW league secretary for the 2023 season.
So the final round of the season is cancelled but each league member will be getting a certificate for 18 holes of golf w/cart that they can use anytime at Mill Creek. This certificate will be valid for the remaining 2022 season and all of the 2023 season.
The four teams still in play for the flight champions will use these certificates to play an 18 hole “position round” scheduled at your convivence. You will be provided scorecards with handicaps adjusted for 18 holes and all play will be from the white tees.
One last note: Mill Creek will be picking up the tab for beverages on the course during the tournament and during the banquet. They are offering us this as a Thank You for being in the league and putting up with the course in less than favorable conditions this year.
