Ever wonder how your 14 Hole Golf League Handicap index is calculated? Well, wonder no more. The mystery is about to unravel.
- Step1: A minimum of three scores and a maximum of 20 is required to get started. Collect your last 20 differentials. A differential is the difference between your weekly score (adjusted for nothing higher than your max score per hole) and par for the holes you played on a given night). That’s why the “<== Par for 14 holes” notation is on the scorecard. I keep a running list of the differentials for every league member and sub for the past 15 years. The differential for the previous week is on the Weekly Standings page
- Step 2: Drop the highest 12 differentials. Keep only the lowest 8.
- Step 3: Get an average of the remaining differentials used by adding them together and dividing by the number used (i.e., if five differentials are used, add them up and divide by five). Drop all the digits after the tenths (do not round off) and the result is handicap index.
Presto! You have your 14 Hole Golf League handicap index. This index is rounded the nearest whole number to calculate your handicap at Mill Creek.
Now what do you do if you don’t have 20 scores to draw from? Well, we (and the USGA) have a formula for that as well.
